Why animals matter in the Christian faith

Animals have always been part of the Christian story, yet they are rarely spoken about in church life.

At the same time, many people care deeply about animals. We see it in how we treat companion animals, in what we share online, and in the concern people show for animal welfare. But for many Christians, this concern feels separate from faith. Something personal, rather than part of discipleship.

At Sarx, we believe this matters.

What we believe

We believe that caring about animals is not an optional extra, but part of what it means to follow Christ.

Our faith shapes how we see the world, and how we treat those within it.

  • God is the creator of all life
Animals are not just resources. They are part of God’s beloved creation, cared for and valued by him.
  • Jesus shows us what love looks like
His life points us toward compassion and the moral priority of the vulnerable.
  • God’s plan includes animals
The Bible envisions a future where all creation is completed and made whole.
  • We are called to live differently now
As Christians, we are called to reflect that future in the way we live today.

Living this out

Following Jesus doesn’t always mean doing what is easiest or most convenient.

Sometimes it means asking difficult questions:

What does it mean to follow Christ in a world where animals are routinely bred, confined and killed for food?

How should we respond to systems that rely on suffering?

And what might a more compassionate way of living look like in practice?

Our role

Sarx exists to help Christians explore these questions.

We share resources, stories and ideas that reconnect faith with compassion for animals, and support people in taking thoughtful, practical steps.
